All Hallows Write Tag: Love Notes

This challenge came to me courtesy of Jenna Moreci and Sam Kasse, who created this.

The way you play this tag game is to answer the following questions in relation to one of your WIPs or a novel that you wrote and published. I’m currently in the middle of editing my first novel, Love Notes, so I decided that I will answer the questions for this novel.

The rules, courtesy of Sam’s Tumblr, are:

#1 – Provide a BRIEF description of your novel before starting.

#2 – Don’t use the same character for more than 3 answers.

So what is Love Notes? It’s a chick lit novel about an aspiring pianist named Allie, who meets Jethro, the bass player of an indie blues-rock band, on the New York City subway. Their new relationship becomes complicated when Allie becomes a contestant on a talent search reality show. As Allie adjusts to being on camera, she has to figure out how to define herself as a musician or lose herself to the blinding lights of fame.

Here we go.

  1. It’s Halloween night! What is your protagonist dressed up as?  Allie would dress up as Osgood from Doctor Who or Molly Hooper from Sherlock. She’s a huge fan of both shows.
  2. Who in your cast refuses to dress up and shows up at the Halloween party without a costume?  The most likely candidate for that is Kristine, Allie’s mentor. She’s very prim and proper, being the Token Reality Show British Critic that she is, and doesn’t like Halloween because of the wild parties and kids begging for candy. The only reason she would be at a Halloween party is if it was some kind of music-related charity event.
  3. Which character wears the most outrageous costume, and what would it be? Regan would win the category of most over-the-top costume. She idolizes Katy Perry, so she would dress up as Katy Perry in the “California Gurls” music video.
  4. On Halloween, werewolves, vampires, and zombies are on the prowl. Which of your characters gets caught in their clutches, and which creature do they subsequently turn into?  Love Notes takes place in a world without any paranormal creatures, but zombies were huge in the Love Notes universe. Therefore, I can imagine one of the Songbirds turning into a zombie. The Songbirds are Regan’s little “worker bees” who don’t really think for themselves. Being zombies is totally fitting for them, anyway, because they’re aimless social parasites.
  5. Who wins the contest for best costume? Stephanie, Allie’s younger sister. Stephanie works for a fashion show and she’s friendly with all the contestants who compete in it, so she can easily have a great costume ready to go.
  6. Who hands out toothbrushes to the trick and treaters? Allie’s mother, Annalee. Annalee works as a pharmacist, so she’s particularly health-conscious.
  7. Which two of your characters decide to pair up and do an angel/devil costume together? Cassie and Pete, the drummer and keyboard player (respectively) for Jethro’s band, Digital Poltergeist. They are all about the couple costumes. Cassie would dress up as a devil because she’s mischievous and brash. Pete would be the angel because he’s sweet and soft-spoken. They are adorable together.
  8. Someone is too scared to even attend the Halloween party. Who is it? Allie is the most likely candidate for this because she has general anxiety disorder and doesn’t like big, crowded, loud parties. She might go if it’s just a small party with her sister and friends or if they’re just hanging out somewhere in costume.
  9.  Who overdoses on Halloween candy and ends up sick? Ted, the sleazy lead producer of the show that Allie competes in. Ted is overindulgent in general and he would go overboard with candy and alcohol.
  10. Which character is most likely to place a curse/hex on someone and who would they curse? Regan would definitely place a hex on Allie if she had the power to do so if it means winning the competition. She’s a real dog that way.

I encourage anyone else to join in on the fun. This is a great way to get to know your characters!

Comicpalooza. Nope, I Still Can’t Believe It!

So yesterday was awesome. As you can tell from the title, I went to a convention. It was the first time I’ve been to a con since college and the first time I went to a con as huge as Comicpalooza.

Cons are one of the few places where I can say it’s safe to talk to strangers. I wasn’t sure what line I was supposed to be in going in. The first thing I went to was the weapons check since I was cosplaying Buffy, stake and all. The people at the weapons check told me which line to go into. As I was in line for those who pre-registered, I talked to a guy who cosplayed as Indiana Jones. He was a con veteran and he gave me some advice about how to go about cons as huge as Comicpalooza.

After getting my pass (a red bracelet since I only paid for a one-day ticket), I went straight to the autograph area to get in line for one particular Buffy actor: James Marsters, the man who played Spike. I found one other Buffy cosplayer. Most of the people in Comicpalooza dressed as something Doctor Who related, Firefly, Doctor Horrible, Marvel…but not a single vampire to be found.

But who the heck wants a Spike cosplayer when I got to pretend to stake the real deal? I told him that I was going to the Buffy panel and he told me (and later everyone else at the Buffy panel) to ask him the most embarrassing question we can think of. There is a word for a man like that, but that word might make this blog NSFW! Just take my word for it, James Marsters is seriously self-assured.

After getting my picture taken with James Marsters, I convinced my friend to get a photo with one of his favorite actors. A good handful of actors from Power Rangers were there and my friend had my eye on one particular actor. Since I was Buffy, I basically told him “Seize the Day!” My friend did so and was forever grateful for my encouragement.

My friend and I headed straight to the Buffy Panel, taking some pictures along the way. It was so awesome seeing Xander, Glory, Clem, Adam, and Spike! I was bouncing and screaming and I was pretty sure I was embarrassing myself, but hey, I’m at a con! Where else can I get away with it?

I had two questions for the cast. I asked Nicholas Brendon if he knew about the schwarma line in Avengers and how that line was inspired by something he said on the set of Buffy. Nicholas said that he did hear about it and that he hasn’t watched Avengers yet. But apparently Robert Downey Jr stole the credit for coming up with the line.

My second question was for James Marsters. I asked him something along the lines of “So did you have to work to get into the character of Spike or did it just come naturally?” His answer was something along the lines of “A bit of both and it’s kind of embarrassing to think about it.” That’s right. I met the challenge he asked the entire audience! This bouncy, crazy, slightly autistic girl managed to embarrass her favorite celebrity in the best way possible!

After that, my friend and I debated on whether or not we should go to the Agents of SHIELD panel. The line was a mile long and we were getting hungry. I was basically set on just shopping in the Dealer’s Room for the rest of the day, so we went to get lunch. After lunch, my friend and I got drafted into playing Quidditch. I played the position of Beater. It was actually pretty fun even though I had no idea how to play.

I spent the rest of the con shopping in the Dealer’s Room and star-gazing at the celebrities in the autograph area. I got a gift for my brother and an art commission for myself. By the time I was ready to go home, I was lying down in a sitting area, exhausted in the best way possible.

So yeah. Conventions. Definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences! I highly recommend going and going all out! Cosplay! Meet your favorite celebs and get some seriously awesome merchandise.

EPL (CV) Day 2: Sing…Sing a Song

Today was a little more low-key than yesterday. I wore earrings for the first time in forever. (I had to get them re-pierced and I just took my earrings off.) It felt really weird, but I liked how they looked. But, like the nails, they are definitely not something I want to wear all the time.

The best part of the day, though, was going to the local arcade, where they had karaoke rooms, just like in Akibaranger. (If you don’t know what that is, Google it.)

It was so much fun singing karaoke in a place other than the usual Filipino family reunion. Di and her friends were hilarious!

Here are some grid photos featuring the highlights of the hour-long karaoke-rama.
